Hydrogel lenses Vs Silicone Hydrogel lenses
Hydrogel lenses Vs Silicone Hydrogel lenses
Both hydrogel and silicone hydrogel lenses are known as "soft contact lenses", made from a mouldable plastic material. The varying composition plastics play a part in the comfortability and quality of the lenses.
Hydrogel lenses are made from flexible plastic combined with oxygen to allow water and oxygen permeability. These lenses have smaller oxygen permeability, thus cheaper than silicone hydrogel lenses and are one of the most common types of materials in the market.
Silicone hydrogel lenses are advanced soft lenses and as the name suggests, contains silicone. Silicone are exceptional materials used to increase oxygen permeability compared to hydrogel lenses. This allows for silicone hydrogel lenses to be worn for longer periods of time, perfect for the active lifestyle, working adults and those susceptible to dry eyes.
The difference in material composition between the both lenses, provide varying levels of comfort depending on the wearer. For this reason, hydrogel lenses are cheaper than silicone hydrogel lenses.
Which lenses should I choose? Hydrogel or Silicone Hydrogel lenses?
Both lenses work perfectly well. The differences are duration of wear and price. You may choose either of them depending on your level of requirement on your contact lenses. However this all comes down to your comfortability so it is best to trial both types of lenses before deciding the best one that suits you.
