What You Need To Know About Visual Impairment And Learning

According to a study published in the Journal of Behavioural Optometry, 80% of what we learn is obtained through our visual processing abilities. One of the biggest challenges for people with vision impairments is that they often have difficulty learning effectively. They may have trouble following instructions or reading text aloud. They may also find it difficult to complete tasks that require them to use their eyesight, such as completing homework or socialising with their peers.

Why are we concerned about Vision Impairments in children?

Learning Difficulties Are Commonly Linked to Vision Problems, and it is more common than you think...

- Vision problems affect 1 in 20 preschoolers and 1 in 4 school-aged children.

- An estimated 10 million children below ten years of age have vision problems that affect their learning ability.

- As many as 80% of children who compete with a reading deficiency show insufficiency in one or more basic visual skills, such as eye focusing and eye-tracking problems.

Suppose a child is not achieving their potential in school or enjoying even fun learning activities. In that case, a comprehensive paediatric eye exam should be part of the evaluation period when trying to understand the ‘why’ behind the struggle. It’s crucial to note that most vision problems are not detected during a routine school vision screening.

The College of Optometrists in Vision Development describes learning as a process that occurs through complex and interrelated processes, where vision is a key contributor. Children cannot fully communicate what they are feeling and experiencing at such young ages. Furthermore, visually impaired children may not know that what they are seeing (or not seeing) is incorrect and a call for concern.

Studies show that 60% of students identified as problem learners have undetected vision troubles; a child’s vision must be assessed before the school year to give them a healthy start.
